Dewpoint, which launched in July 2010, is the first industry training body to achieve an independent accreditation from a recognised examination body for its water and fire mitigation training courses.

Steve Gelder, managing director at Gelder, told Post he became frustrated a couple of years ago before the academy was started as insurers thought they had to use a drying company to carry out expensive work. "What they actually needed was a builder with the right skills," he said. "We originally started it for our own guys and it has started to take on a life of its own."

Gelder said the group's disaster response team and a range of insurance clients had been asking for a more hands-on and commonsense approach to training for a number of years.

Gelder has since had staff from GAB Robins, LAS, Legal & General, Royal Bank of Scotland Insurance and Ageas complete the training.

Mike Johnson, training manager at Gelder, said: "The demand took us by surprise, but as we kept receiving more reports of cost savings and reduced claim cycles, it became obvious we needed to move the training forward."

Dewpoint has its own training facilities and a purpose-built flood building. Mike Odell, head of training and development at GAB Robins, told Post it has put 50 adjusters through the academy and is continuing to send staff. "We are interested in the Dewpoint qualification because of the depth of knowledge around water damage," he said. "They can be much more proactive on the claims and make decisions that can sometimes be particularly trying."

Odell added that it has seen results in terms of the time it takes to manage claims, the cost and customer experience.
